We know that there’s a couple of things that the fans want to have answered/are likely to be answered at some point in Doctor Who.
The first thing is what did Paul McGann’s Doctor do before we saw him again for the 50th anniversary? The second is, why does the Doctor pick the faces he does?
Well, if these rumours are true, we could have both answered this year.
Firstly, let’s look at the rumour that David Tennant will be in this series. It looks like Tennant and the man who brought Doctor Who back, Russell T Davies, are both in Cardiff right now (where Who films) and no-one knows why.:

Stephen Moffat himself said that the explanation of why each regeneration looks the way it does is Davies’ idea: “We are aware that Peter Capaldi’s played a part in Doctor Who before and we’re not going to ignore the fact. I’ll let you in on this. I remember Russell told me he had a big old plan as to why there were two Peter Capaldis in the Who universe, one in Pompeii and one in Torchwood. When I cast Peter, [Russell] got in touch to say how pleased he was, I said ‘Okay, what was your theory and does it still work?’ and he said ‘Yes it does, here it is’. So I don’t know if we’ll get to it… we’ll play that one out over time. It’s actually quite neat.”
So is it possible that we may see an explanation this season and have Tennant and Davies involved? We know that Davind Tennant met the character of Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii and he was played by Capaldi… so might we see Tennant’s Doctor revisit this episode, explaining why Capaldi looks like Caecilius?
Or, here’s another theory that ties into the McGann rumour too, could Tennant feature in an un-related flashback?
A rumour is doing the rounds that the second last episode if the new series will feature a flashback to the Doctor’s past regenerations, with some being an extended flashback i.e. there’ll be new scenes filmed with certain actors… this could explain Tennant being in Wales. But what about McGann?
Well, Warped Factor are reporting that McGann has already filmed scenes as the eighth Doctor.
This could be great if true – both parts – because Tennant remains one of the most popular Doctors and, let’s be honest, we REALLY want more of McGann’s Doctor.
Let’s hope so of this pans out…
