If there’s one thing that has been impressing me recently, it’s the DC Universe streaming service shows.
Kicking off with Titans then Doom Patrol and then into Swamp Thing which, sadly, won’t last past its debut series.
However, although we have Star Girl, Harley Quinn and more to look forward to, it’s Swamp Thing that seems to be the biggest missed opportunity, especially when we’re getting news on what was planned for the show.
A report from Business Insider says that the crew were confident the series was set to be a winner (for the record, it’s wonderful) and everyone was shocked when the hammer fell on the production.
Even executive producer James Wan had this to say on Instagram: “Don’t really know or understand why #Swampthing was cancelled, but I can tell you this — all the cast and crew, and producing/writing team poured their hearts into this. Really proud of everyone’s hard work. Go watch episode 2, and immortalize these 10 episodes. Swampy deserves it.”
However, the report goes into some detail on what was planned for the show in future seasons and, as a DC fan, it’s heart-breaking: “The show had a possible three-season arc and the feeling on set was that it could have gone past that if it was a hit, with characters spinning off into their own shows. The source used the specific example of a potential Justice League Dark team-up series.”
Fans will know that Swamp Thing is a founding member of Justice League Dark which has characters like Constantine, Etrigan The Demon, Deadman and Zatanna in its roster… maybe we could have seen The CW’s Constantine star Matt Ryan in the show, after all?
Let’s just hope that if Justice League Dark was planned for the show’s future, then we may still see it in some form on the service.
Would you have liked to see the macabre team-up on TV? I know I certainly would have.
