Wait… is Edgar Wright teasing a Doctor Who gig in his future?
The Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs the World director has put out a series of cryptic posts on his Instagram over the last few days that have Doctor Who fans wondering if he’s set to direct or write something in the Timelord’s future?
Check out the images:
Now, while not explicitly Whovian, the blue door definitely puts in mind the Doctor’s time-traveling vehicle, the TARDIS, the tiles bring to mind memories of the inside of the TARDIS, and the light shadow, well, that’s just a bit creepy and alien-looking.
Now, it may be nothing but it’s worth noting that, as we highlight in the image, Russell T Davies liked the first post of the blue door.
Why is that important?
Well, Davies is coming back to showrun Doctor Who next year – after it was almost destroyed by current showrunner Chris Chibnall – when the show will celebrate its 60th anniversary. Davies revealed that current Doctor Jodie Whittaker’s final episode will air in October this year (here) when she will be replaced by new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, who will step in to star in the 60th anniversary special which will welcome Davies back, welcome the new Doctor, celebrate the series’ birthday and bring the character back to his/her former glory.
Could Wright be the man directing it? We’ve just learned who the new Doctor is (here) and when he takes over… maybe we now know who will be directing him in the role for the massive event.
Wright, let’s not forget – see video below – was approached by Davies in 2005 to direct Rose, the episode which brought Doctor Who back to the masses after years of being away and introduced Christopher Eccleston as the character. Wright, in the video below from 2010, admits he’s a massive Doctor Who fan and that he couldn’t direct Rose due to scheduling issues and his mum has never forgiven him, adding that he’s up for working on the show anytime that suits.
When you put this all together, it just seems like it makes sense… Edgar Wright, Doctor Who and Russell T Davies feel like a team made in heaven.
Man, being excited for Doctor Who again… it feels good.
Are we barking up the wrong tree? Let us know, guys.
