Jon Favreau confirms IG-88 will be in The Mandalorian Star Wars live-action series

December 27th, 2018 by Marc Comments

So, you may recall before Christmas we reported that the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian may feature robot bounty hunter IG-88 and now it looks like we have confirmation.

IG-88 first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back and has recently appeared in The Clone Wars animated series and even more recently in the Forces of Destiny shorts and now it looks like he’s set to be a full-on badass in live-action!

Here’s what we wrote originally:

Word is the show will feature The Droid Gotra which is a droid clan mentioned in several places in the new lore including the Tarkin novel and Doctor Aphra comics – so what does this mean? Well, bounty hunter IG-88 (the droid in the image above) is part of the clan and there has been news that an IG-88 has been spotted on the Mandalorian set.

Now, IG-88 appeared as a not-very-mobile character in The Empire Strikes Back and then had some action and development in The Clone Wars animated series, but it was be very cool to see him kick ass in a live-action context – indeed reports are that showrunner Jon Favreau is a big fan ever since he was a kid IG-8 will be killing, fighting and riding speeder bikes!

And not show runner Jon Favreau has shared an image on his Instagram… so we’re confident this means he’ll be making an appearance.

We can’t wait to see how he is in glorious live-action… the only time we saw him like that before he just stood still menacingly.

What say you all?

Lucasfilm is pleased to announce the cast of the first-ever Star Wars live-action series — The Mandalorian.

Pedro Pascal (Narcos) has been cast in the title role as a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. He is joined by Gina Carano (Deadpool), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Carl Weathers (Predator), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), and Nick Nolte (Warrior).

“We’re having a great time working with this incredibly talented group and excited for everyone to see what we’re up to,” says Executive Producer Jon Favreau.

Currently in production, The Mandalorian is written and executive produced by Jon Favreau, with Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) directing the first episode and serving as executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Additional episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

The Mandalorian is set following the events of Return of the Jedi and follows the adventures of a “lone gunfighter” as he navigates the galaxy in the post-Empire/early days of the New Republic. The series’ first season is expected to be eight episodes. The episodes are written by executive producer Jon Favreau and directed by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow (Better Call Saul), and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope). The series is executive produced by Favreau and Filoni, as well as Colin Wilson and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

The highly-anticipated series will be exclusive to Disney+, The Walt Disney Company’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, which is set to launch in the U.S. in late 2019.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
