Lex Luthor is heading to Supergirl this season… and does this location mean Smallville IS part of the Arrowverse after all?

So earlier we reported that it was rumoured that The CW may be working on bringing us a Superman TV Series at some point, with this Christmas’ crossover Arrowverse event, Elseworlds, acting as a launchpad for it and now we have even more news tying into the Superman lore and The CW shows.

First up, news has broke that Superman’s biggest enemy, and one of comics’ most famous villains, Lex Luthor is set to appear in Supergirl this season although not in the crossover… not that it matters because once he’s in the universe, he’s in the universe.

Here’s the full report:

Lex Luthor’s arrival on Supergirl has been a long time coming. Not only has the character been mentioned multiple times, but the show already features his sister Lena (Katie McGrath) — who is best friends with Kara (Melissa Benoist) — and his imprisoned mother Lillian (Brenda Strong). In the show’s world, Lex was actually friends with Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) before he became Superman’s enemy and was sentenced to prison. In the wake of her brother’s incarceration, Lena took control of Luthor Corp and rebranded it to L-Corp in order to distance herself from her brother’s criminal deeds; however, Lex didn’t respond to kindly to this and actually tried to have his sister assassinated at the beginning of season 2. Needless to say, this won’t be a joyous reunion.

“We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season,” said executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller, “We’ve talked about having Lex on the show since it’s inception and we’re excited to have him finally arrive.  We can’t wait for him to shake things up in National City and watch him go toe to toe with not only Supergirl, but his sister Lena Luthor.”

We’re also very excited to see Lex in The CW – and we do hope Michael Rosenbaum is free to play him. We’ll keep you posted!

But wait! We have more goodness…

We all know that Smallville, the proto-Superman series that ran a few years ago starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent, has connected to the Arrowverse already (here) and we know that Welling almost made the jump across to Supergirl before (here) and we have speculated before about Smallville’s Superman being the superman we now have in the Arrowverse albeit somewhat different looking (here, here, here and here) but we’d sort of given up on that.

But now we’re solidly in the land of ‘what if’ again.

Why?

Well, it seems that the Elseworlds event will see the story heading to Clark Kent’s home AKA Kent Farm and it’s the same Kent far that was used in Smallville!

Yeah, we know, it’s probably jus more loving fan service – The CW loves casting DC actors for their shows and we love it – but what if… just imagine if this WAS the same Superman we last saw in the series finale of Smallville in 2001 on, we might add, The CW?

Wouldn’t that be awesome? A couple of throwaway lines between Superman and Lex and it’s all connected.

Please, please, please make it happen, The CW!

Supergirl airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
