OK, you’ve been warned, this is very spoilerific if you haven’t seen the latest episode of Arrow, guys…
Ready?
Ok, let’s go.
So, at the end of the mid-season finale, Felicity Smoak, Arrow AKA Oliver Queen’s love interest and fellow crime fighter, was in a limo which was riddled with bullets by unknown assailants ala the end of On Her Majesty’s secret Service.
When Oliver took her out of the car she was in really bad shape and looked like she might be dying. We don’t think she’ll die – well, we hope she won’t – but we can see something big in her future.
Now, firstly, let us go back and look at her character. We LOVE Felicity for several reasons: She’s smart, beautiful, fearless, strong and funny. And, over the four seasons, she has become an integral part of team Arrow, being the computer genius who looks after Arrow, Canary, Diggle, Speedy and the rest when they are out crime fighting. In a show that has loving tipped its hat to Batman (Arrow himself Stephen Amell even admitted it was a ‘rip-ff’ recently) she has become its own version of Oracle.
Who is Oracle? Well, the Batman fans out there will know that Oracles is the former Batgirl and daughter of Commission Gordon, Barbara Gordon, who was crippled by Joker in The Killing Joke and returned in a wheelchair as Oracle, who works from a Gotham clocktower and looks after Batman and his allies as they fight crime night after night.
Well now we’re hearing a lot of speculation online that Felicity may become the Arrow-verse’s version of Oracle. Officially. We’re even hearing that Arrow and Flash showrunner Marc Guggenheim has reportedly said that Felicity will get her own code name with the letter A in it. And, hey, there’s an A in Oracle, right?
Remember last season the episode The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak was supposed to be called Oracle but was changed at the last minute? So this isn’t the first time this rumour has emerged.
It’s odd because, much like the rumours that John Diggle would be Green Lantern, we love the idea AND hate it. And for the same reasons; Felicity is certainly a strong enough character to be Oracle but she’s also strong enough to be her own character too. We hope they don’t do this… but will certainly be OK with it if they do. Probably.
