Moffat: Capaldi is NOT the 12th Doctor

July 25th, 2014 by Marc Comments

Already unpopular with most Whovians, showrunner Steven Moffat has angered and perplexed them in equal measure – by branding them wrong for thinking Peter Capaldi is the Twelfth Doctor.

Yes the grand high Moff is now saying that Peter Capaldi is NOT the 12th Doctor.  Or any sort of numbered Doctor… What?  This comes after the showrunner completely threw continuity out the window in last years episode The Name of The Doctor, which saw a previously unknown version of the Doctor introduced.  He was then revealed to have regenerated from Paul McGann and into Christpher Eccleston making him Doctor number 9, right?  Nope, he was the War Doctor.  Add in the botched David Tennant Tenth Doctor regeneration from Journeys End, and fans were left scratching their heads.

“You are all wrong! He has never called himself the anything-th Doctor in the show.” said Moffat, “If the Doctor was a real person and walked in here, and you said, ‘Which incarnation are you?’ he’d have to think, just as you’d have to think about how many houses you’ve lived in. He never thinks of himself as a numbered Doctor. The Twelfth Doctor means the twelfth actor to have played the lead in Doctor Who. That’s all it means. There is no such character as the Twelfth Doctor and never has been.”

This has emerged after Moffat seemingly got tired of fans referring to each Doctor by the order in which they first appeared, but this is something that the show has only vaguely addressed over the years.

Being interviewed by SFX Magazine, Moffat added: “It’s a long time into the show before any such nonsense ever comes up. It’s purely us lot, us fans, wittering on about calling him the Third or the Fourth Doctor – which is actually quite an unpleasant thing to do. It doesn’t feel right at all when you type that. I had to do that for the [50th] special. It was the Tenth Doctor, the Eleventh Doctor, and it felt like a betrayal, in a way. But what else could you do? Out of curiosity I looked at what they did in [1983’s 20th anniversary special] The Five Doctors. They didn’t number them at all. Do you know what they called them? The Hartnell Doctor, the Pertwee Doctor…”

Yes its just the fans who refer to the Doctors by their number, try telling that to the merchandisers…

Doctor Who returns with Deep Breath on August 23rd.
