Netflix cancels Punisher and Jessica Jones, ending their relationship with Marvel

February 18th, 2019 by Marc Comments

Well, it’s no surprise, but Netflix has – like Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil – pulled the plug on the Jessica Jones and Punisher shows.

Taking to Instagram, Punisher star Jon Bernthal thanked the fans for their support for the shows:

Adding to this, Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb had this to say for the shows, collectively called the Defenders:

It had never been done before.Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then…

…they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.

We called them The Defenders.

They said it couldn’t be done.

But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 148 one-hour episodes.

Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft.

We loved each and every minute of it.

And we did it all for you — the fans — who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it.

So, Thank You!

On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful to our audience.

Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.

As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, “The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.”

To be continued…!

Jeph Loeb and all of us at Marvel Television

The ‘To be continued’ line is a bit vague, be we are hearing rumours that Hulu may be keen to pick the shows up, moving forward since we know it was Netflix, not Marvel, that pulled the plug on the shows.

Craig Erwich, senior vice president of originals for Hulu, told The Wrap he’s up for bringing the shows back: “Marvel has a ton of titles we’d be interested in. It kind of just depends on when they’re ready, [and] who, most importantly, is going to be behind these things.”

On the shows leaving, Netflix said in a statement“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

While we weren’t big fans of the shows on the whole, we did like Daredevil and Punisher… we’d love to see them back and we know there’s a lot of fans out there of all the shows, we we reckon they’d be a safe bet for Hulu or alone else to pick up.

Jessica Jones season 3 will air on Netflix later this year, drawing to a close this corner of the MCU.

What say you all?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
