Hello Sweetie.

Yep, the one and only River Song is coming back to Doctor Who, but not in the main season, but rather in the upcoming Christmas Special, which has now become a Doctor Who tradition.

For those who don’t know, River Song is a long-time companion from Matt Smith’s run, and is technically the Doctor’s wife…one of the anyway. She was a fan favorite amongst fans, and given her unique “backwards through time” history backstory, many have wondered if she could return to see another version of the Doctor. Alex Kingston (who plays River) is very excited to be returning:

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” Kingston said of Song’s return to BBC. “Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

Now astute fans will note that River isn’t technically alive anymore in “present day continuity”. So how she’ll return is going to be highly speculated. Showrunner Stephen Moffat did tease how she could return…

“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song?” Moffat said. “The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”
