So, call me old-fashioned but, to me, a Robocop spin-off series would probably be best to feature Robocop. But that’s not what’s happening.
MGM has had plenty of plans over the years to bring back Robocop with the Neil Blomkamp sequel (here) being the closest to happening; but now a new series set in the world of Paul Verhoeven’s iconic movie is coming based on an idea by original creators Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner when they were making Robocop 2 in 1990.
Now, this isn’t the first time Robocop, outside of the three movies, has come to the small screen with an original Robocop series, Robcop: Prime Directives mini-series and even, believe it or not, a Robocop: The Animated series existing. Sadly, they were all, well, crap.
Now Neumeier has revealed that he’s currently looking to pick up the backstory if Dick Jones, senior vice president of Omni Consumer Products (OCP), the company ruining Detroit in the movie played by the great Ronny Cox.
So yeah, a prequel series based arounf Dick Jones’ rise to glory before the deadly fall.
interested in exploring the backstory of another pivotal character from the first movie. If Neumeier gets his wish, we could be getting a prequel series centering on a young Dick Jones.
“There’s the idea of doing things about business and law enforcement in the city of Detroit a minute-and-a-half in the future,” said Neumeier.
“It would be a way to do all sorts of stories about business and tech, Silicon Valley, corporations, snakes in suits, cops, all that. It’s a wonderful rich tapestry. So we’ve been talking about it and I think we have an interesting story. It’s fun to work with a younger version of the Dick Jones we meet in RoboCop. He’s an actualised corporate predator [in the move] but nobody necessarily starts out being the bad guy.”
Well, I suppose at least it won’t be a cloaked Donald Trump story.
“So it’s going to be about the evolution of Richard Jones to Dick Jones. The story of OCP and how the world moves into the future, how the corporate world behaves.”
While I would like to see a proper, balls-to-the-wall Robocop series, Jones was a fascinating bad guy and an exploration of who he was could be a lot of fun.
What say you all? Let me know…
