Sabrina TV show reboot adds Doctor Who’s Michelle Gomez and more to cast

February 18th, 2018 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Green Wing and Doctor Who Icon Michelle Gomez, Juliette Lewis and newcomer Chance Perdomo have joined what is becoming a very interesting cast list on the reboot of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Chilling Tales of Sabrina (here).

Kiernan Shipka, Mad Men’s Sally Draper, is playing the title character in the new, darker version of the 90’s coming of age sitcom

And now we know Doctor Who’s Missy, Michelle Gomez, will play Mary Wardell, Sabrina’s favourite teacher who “when she is possessed by the devil’s handmaiden, Madame Satan, will turn into a sultry and cunning manipulator who is always trying to lure Sabrina down the path of darkness.” Sounds like perfect casting!

Lewis will play Hilda Spellman, one of Sabrina’s two witch aunts. More nurturing than Zelda, Hilda’s motherly nature and warm sense of humour belie a wicked, ghoulish streak. She is as adept at brewing spite jars against her family’s enemies as she is at concocting love potions for the students at Baxter High

Perdomo will be playing Ambrose Spellman, Sabrina’s English cousin who also happens to be a warlock “placed under house arrest by the witches council, he is forbidden from leaving the funeral home where he lives with the Spellman women.  Witty, Puckish and pansexual, he is one of Sabrina’s partners in crimes and always up to mischief”.

Sabrina is based on the comic book Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.  This adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Now that the two shows are on different networks, It remains to be seen if there will be any formal association between Riverdale and the Sabrina series. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book series features brief appearances by Archie characters like Betty and Veronica, but it is primarily a self-contained narrative.

Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the adaptation (the comic book basis for which he also wrote) and will executive produce. Lee Toland Krieger will direct and executive produce with Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. No premiere date has been set for the series
