It looks like we have some details about the highly anticipated Absolute Batman animated series.

Announced at the Annecy Festival last month, it was announced that DC has three animated series in development, with Absolute Batman being the biggest one.

We learned that the comic’s creators, writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, would be involved with its development, and now it’s been revealed that the series will be fully CGI and Snyder will be showrunner and executive producer while Dragotta will serve as producer.

“We have started working on it,” Snyder said about he and Dragotta’s work on the series so far.

Poison Ivy! Two-Face! Zsasz! The Court of Owls! Let’s dive into those big rumours about The Batman: Part II

“The first steps are just writing a series format, kind of a Bible for the whole series, and showing how many episodes we think it is and the structure of it.”

Snyder, talking about the involvement of Warner Bros Animation and DCU bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, said: “I can’t say enough good things about how creator-forward they are, about how hard they work to make sure that Nick and I can really be part of the creative drive of it.”

On the function of the new show, Snyder explained the new series is just the comic, only bigger: “We want it to be as though the comic is just almost a bigger, better, more robust version of the comic on the screen.

“It really looks like the comic book come to life three-dimensionally in the coolest way.”

So… does Bruce Campbell/Ash Williams cameo in Evil Dead Burn? I have the answer…

Finishing up, he says: “There are things that work really well in comics… and some things for animation through different strengths. Trying to really be cognizant of those.”

At Annecy, DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO Peter Safran and Warner Bros Animation president Sam Register also announced DC’s first anime series, Joker: Laugh Riot, as well as a new Krypto series going into development.

Absolute Batman is a whole reimagining of the Batman mythos: Bruce Wayne only lost one parent, he’s not a billionaire but rather a blue-collar worker from the projects, and he’s the size of Bane in this universe and isn’t afraid to go very, very hard on criminals. The book is a massive success and has led to a whole ‘Absolute Universe at DC, with many of the comics’ biggest names appearing in all-new, but still familiar guises.

As for the Joker and Krypto shows, it was revealed that Joker: Laugh Riot is executive produced by Jim Krieg, who worked on the recent animated Watchmen and Crisis on Infinite Earths movies. Yasuhuro Aoki is directing, and it will be animated by SOLA Entertainment in Japan.

As for the story: When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary. But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn’t know who he is.

Not gonna lie, that sounds pretty great.

Hulu’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is officially dead in the water

As for Krypto, it will be exec produced by SpongeBob SquarePants’ CH Greenblatt and according to the official synopsis: “When he’s not hanging out with Superman or Supergirl, Krypto tags along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes who live down the block, and they soon discover he’s a ball of destructive, lovable energy worse than any of them! As he follows them into misadventures and poorly laid plans, Krypto’s pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not.”

It looks like DC and Batman animation fans in particular have an exciting couple of years on the horizon.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
