More Star Trek news from SDCC – if you’ve not seen the new trailer you should; season 2 looks like it’s going to be very good – this time, it’s a new spin-off show.

A new short series is coming called Star Trek: Short Treks and it will be a series made up of four 10-15 minute episodes (basically like a bonus episode each season we guess).

The series will “feature deeper storytelling surrounding the characters and themes from Discovery and the expanding Star Trek universe. The series will launch in the fall and roll out monthly, helping to keep awareness of Discovery high before its return in January 2019.”

So who will we see in Short Treks?

Rainn Wilson will return as Harry Mudd in a short directed by him.

Hidden Figures star Aldis Hodge will star in an episode as Craft, a man who finds himself the only human on board a deserted ship.

There will also be episodes featuring Doug Jones’s Saru which will focus on his being the first Kelpien to join Starfleet.

Finally,Mary Wiseman’s Tilly will feature in, presumably, the final episode for Season 1.

Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman said: “There is no shortage of compelling stories to tell in the Star Trek universe that inspire, entertain, and either challenge our preconceived ideas or affirm long held beliefs, and we are excited to broaden the universe already with Short Treks.

“Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes. They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”

In other Trek news, it was confirmed that X-Men star Rebecca Romijn will be in season two as iconic character from the original series, Number 1, played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry (below).

And finally, will Lorca, played by jason Isaacs, return for Season 2?  Well, showrunner Alex Kurtzman offer a “maybe” on that one.

Here’s hoping…
