#SDCC2019: Brandon Routh to play Superman in The CW’s Crisis Arrowverse crossover! UPDATED

July 19th, 2019 by Marc Comments

So, it’s day 2 of San Diego Comic Con 2019 and The CW – home to the Arrowverse has had their moment in the spotlight and have been talking – and sharing videos (below) from the new season of shows and the upcoming Crisis event and the arrival of new hero, Batwoman.

And, while there was nothing major revealed about Batwoman – the first episode aired at the show and while it was mostly considered a mess, there seemed to be an overall consensus that there’s potential there – they had a massive, fun bit of news about the Crisis crossover show.

Brandon Routh is coming back as Superman!

Routh is starring in The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as Ray Palmer/The ATOM but was also the man who wore the blue, yellow and red of Superman in Superman Returns in 2006 as the Superman played originally by Christopher Reeve.

So, it seems Routh is playing both characters in the crossover event; the actor himself teased he’s playing four characters in it, but Im guessing that’s alter egos too.

This is great news as Routh, while starring in a not great movie, was a great Superman and his return is a welcome one.

On top of this Tyler Hoechlin, who already plays Superman in The Arrowverse, is also returning.

Fans will of course know in the comics the Crisis On Infinite Earth events saw heroes and villains from all over the DC multiverse meeting – and for this reason, I still believe there’s more to come in regards to news and announcements.

Rumour has it Routh will play Kingdom Come Superman in the crossover. Who? Well:

Ten years prior to the start of the events of Kingdom Come, the Joker floods the offices of the Daily Planet with Joker venom, killing all the staff except for Lois Lane, who finds a gas mask. Lois tries to attack the Joker, who fractures her skull in retaliation. Superman returns as Lois succumbs to her injuries and dies. As the Joker arrives for his trial, he is killed by a new superhero named Magog. In an instance of jury nullification, Magog is acquitted for his act. Superman is appalled by the public embracing a killer as a hero. Already disheartened at the death of Lois Lane, Kal-El abandons his life as Superman and retreats to his Fortress of Solitude, where he spends the next decade. During Superman’s absence a team of new heroes, led by Magog, attempts to capture the Parasite, which results in the irradiation of the entire state of Kansas and much of the surrounding area when the Parasite kills Captain Atom.

UPDATE: Looks like Routh is indeed playing Kingdom Come Superman (that the red and black logo)

oS we could see the 13 years older Routh back as a bitter, darker Superman.

Anyway, that’s the news… what say you all? Personally, I can’t wait to see Routh back in the role.

As for the footage revealed:

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
