Star Wars Visions producer explains how ro deal with the shows canon issue

April 26th, 2023 by Marc Comments

One of the things that got me most excited at Star Wars Celebration Europe was the trailer for Visions Vol 2.

The trailer, below, is everything you’d want from Star Wars but it had me wondering if this series was, in fact, canon to the rest of Star Wars.

The first season was a lot of fun although we were told that it was not part of the original timeline that we have all followed since Star Wars first appeared in 1977… and, not going to lie, this bugged me as I love canon to be maintained in all things (I know, I know) and I think it might have slightly diminished my love for Vol 1 of the animated series.

However, now, in a new SFX interview, Star Wars: Visions executive producer James Waugh gives a better way to treat the canon standing of the series.

A year ago, when the first season came out, Waugh talked a little about the standing of the series and said that’s not really something they were worried about: “I think these shorts are all authentic Star Wars storytelling… But some are less on the timeline than others. Some could very much fit within our timeline. But ‘Visions’, as a whole, is more of a celebration of Star Wars through this unique perspective, this unique form, this medium, and culture. And that was really the intention.

“Some stories like ‘Tatooine Rhapsody’ or ‘The Elder’ can very easily fit within certain canonical points… But that’s not really the point of the initiative. We needed this to be something different, and we needed it to be really from the hearts of all these creators, not to try and answer questions in Star Wars. Instead, you have Star Wars as an amazing palette to tell stories through.”

However, speaking about the new season, he seems to have taken a softer approach to the canon standing of the stories and even admits that it’s really up to the viewer: “Some of the stories could easily fit within a canonical perspective… and if you think that story takes place within your head canon, great! Even then, we weren’t looking for expanded tales about known characters. What’s interesting about Visions is the opportunity to use the texture and richness of the galaxy to create new stories and new characters that are very clearly influenced by the elements of a galaxy.

“I will say Aardman has a very special guest star, a known character from Star Wars, and there are tons of Easter eggs throughout that are instantly recognisable, and characters we’ve known throughout the trilogies and the shows.”

In case you’re curious, we actually learned at Star Wars Celebration that that ‘known character’ is [highlight to read]Wedge Antilles, voiced by Dennis Lawson who played the character in several Star Wars movies.

Personally, one of the things I did enjoy last season was watching the stories and trying to figure out where or even how they might fit in the overall Star Wars storyline, I always like to imagine that Star Wars lore is being relayed by storytellers – the Journal of the Whills, if you like – and just like the EU of old, Legends as it’s now called, everything can fit in… if you’re determined enough.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
