All change in Supergirl Season 4 as some cast are leaving, others are being promoted and the story looks set to tackle one of the biggest Superman stories every told… albeit an Elseworlds one.
So, hold on, one thing at a time.
Firstly, it looks like Win, actor Jeremy Jordan will no longer be a series regular moving forward, however the actor insists that this is not goodbye as he loves everyone and will return at some stage. Here’s what he had to say:
It makes sense that Win step away because, as fun as he was at the beginning, his character has become a bit… stagnant? But it will be nice to know he’s out there. Somewhere.
However, filling the Win-sized hole in the cast will be Brainiac 5 (AKA Brainy), actor Jesse Rath.
“We love the character of Brainiac-5 and can’t imagine anyone but Jesse Rath in the role,” executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller said in a statement. “He brings such fun, heart and brilliance to Brainy, and we’re so excited he’s joining the cast as a series regular for season 4. We have a lot of great Brainy stories to tell.”
Adding to the departures, actor Chris Wood AKA Mon-El is also leaving the show.
“The plan for Chris was always to have him on the show for two years,” executive producer Robert Rovner said. “We’ve loved telling Mon-El’s story, as well as the story we’ve told for him and Kara. We hope the fans felt that it was a satisfying conclusion.”
Executive producer Jessica Queller adds: “They both have destinies in different times as heroes. What they did was the sort-of Casablanca decision of putting what’s most important to them — which is saving the world — first. It’s a little bittersweet that one destiny is to be a hero in this time and one’s destiny is to run the Legion in another time, but I think they grew a lot from knowing one another. They have respect for one another, and they have a respect for the decisions they respectively made.”
Rovner adds: “We love working with Chris, so we’d love to have Mon-El back someday if the story takes us there and if Chris is available.”
We’re also hearing, although nothing has been officially announced yet, that actress Odette Annabel, who played Rayner this season, isn’t set to return either.
Rovner said of her return: “We love Odette. She was amazing in this dual role, playing different characters. We fell in love with her as Sam and we were terrified of her as Reign. If it works out, we’d love to have her back for a few episodes next season.”
BIG SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3 FINALE: Through rather convoluted events, a second Kara Zor-El is created at the very end of the Season 3 finale and it leads into a rather familiar landscape for Superman fans.
“For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics’ Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman,” Rovner and Queller say.
“What happened if — as a baby — Superman landed in Russia and became a hero there instead of in America. It’s an homage to that.”
So, all change at CatCo next season for the Girl of Steel… honestly, Supergirl is getting tough to follow – it’s certainly the weakest CW show (for me, personally), but a change might be just what the show needs.
