Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator pines for a more adult, live-action take on them

July 30th, 2019 by Marc Comments

Has there been any franchise that has been re-imagined and re-developed as much as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

And, while we’re on it, has there been any franchise that’s been as well suited to, well, all its incarnations? From the gritty original movie, to the current explosion of colour animated series, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michealangelo have held up pretty well against it all.

And now co-creator Kevin Eastman seems to be thinking that there’s another way to tell the TMNT story:

“I think of, how I enjoyed Daredevil, the Netflix TV series with Charlie Cox and because Daredevil was a huge influence obviously on the Turtles universe and for me that was my favorite comic growing up. I feel like The Turtles have evolved to this point after 35 years almost, and this sounds weird, but its almost to where they started out where we had the original black and white comic book come out intended for our older audience, and then we developed a cartoon show specifically for a younger audience, and now I feel like we’ve gone back to that place where we have the original fans that are like 30 years old,”  he says.

“I feel like that’s the direction I think we can go and there’ll be enough of and audience to support both. Because we do see a lot of that fans asking when can we get that edgy, you know, Netflix Daredevilish sort of intensity of the Turtles – at the same time, you can balance that with such a wonderful cartoon series like, Rise of the Turtles, the new series, back to that spot where we’re sacred to a much younger audience. So I think that’s hopefully in the future I’d love to see that, really.”

Hmmmmmmm…

Word is that Netflix are already working on an animated TMNT movie (hopefully based on the last inaction of the characters before Rise of the Turtles) so would a live-action series aimed at an older audience be THAT out of the question, really?

Personally, I think the Turtles would take to a adult, live-action series very, very well and now that Eastman has put it in my head, I really need it to happen.

Thoughts?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
