The Boys casts two nerd icons for seasons two and three

September 3rd, 2020 by Marc Comments

Two very cool new and nerdy bits of casting for The Boys’ upcoming Season 2 and 3.

first up, joining season 2 is X-Men star Shawn Ashmore.

Ashmore played Iceman in the X-franchise and in The Boys he will play Lamplighter, an ex-hero with connections to The Seven as he was one of the original team – in fact, it was established in Season 1 that it was his leaving that created the vacancy for Starlight. He also has connections to our anti-heroes, Butcher and co. Oh and, as a lovely little subversion of expectation, Lamplighter is basically Green Lantern with a pyrokinesis staff that allows him to harness and control fire.

Love it!

Boys showrunner Eric Kripke says: “We were thrilled that Shawn — who is, let’s be honest, an OG superhero — wanted to play the crucial part of Lamplighter. He brings so much depth, menace, and world-weary humanity to this former member of the Seven. And Shawn is a really good guy. We’re grateful to have him join our bloody little family.”

From the official description of Lamplighter: Lamplighter is a former superstar, a member of the Seven before he left under mysterious circumstances, to be replaced by Starlight. He ties in directly to the Boys’ tragic history — he’s actually the reason they broke up 8 years ago. So when he enters their lives again, he dredges up painful memories, pokes at their raw nerves, and changes everything.

But that’s not all.

Season 3 – which is now confirmed – has also added a pretty big nerd icon.

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has signed on for the third year of the show.

Taking to Intagram, Ackles wrote: “I keep wondering what I’ll do….when @cw_supernatural finally ends this year… Then it hit me.”

Ackles is set to play Soldier Boy in season three. Soldier Boy is, as you might have guessed, The Boys’ universe’s version of Captain America, having fought in World War II and becoming the first superhero celebrity.

Kripke said: “When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment.

“I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of ‘Supernatural’ to The Boys.”

Looks like the awesomeness of The Boys Season 1 was just the beginning… thoughts?

The Boys Season 2 hits on September 4th with episodes 1-3 and then every week after.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
