TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Agents Of Shield Season 04 Episode 16: What If…

April 5th, 2017 by Todd Black Comments

I find it very interesting (even ironic if we’re being honest) that both a DC Comics show and a Marvel show have dealt with “What If?” scenarios. Technically, DC Comics has done it twice, no, three times! Earth-2, Flashpoint, and “Doomworld” that we just had in Legends of Tomorrow. And now, we have Agents of Shield entering the foray with “What if…”, sadly, this episode felt a lot like “Welcome To Earth-2″, and I don’t mean that in a good way.

To summarize, what I hated about that Flash episode was that both Barry and Cisco knew that this WASN’T there Earth, and yet couldn’t grasp that it wasn’t and kept acting weirdly to those in it. And…”What If…” did the same with Daisy and Simmons.

Now, don’t get me wrong, it makes total sense for Daisy and Simmons to be disoriented, and be shocked to learned that their friends are either in Hydra, are doing something else, or are dead (and some are unaccounted for), but they KNEW going in that this was a fake world, with computer generated people, why would they think that the people in the Framework would recognize them on site? When in theory, especially for Skye…I mean Daisy, she’s been “working with them” in this world the whole time!

So to see Daisy and Simmons continually make blunder after blunder was painful to watch. Especially the first Coulson scene, where it was clear that he didn’t recognize Gemma, but she kept pushing anyway because “she knew him”. That’s not how it works!

One thing I do appreciate was how the world was shown to have changed, and the reasons behind it. When they put May into the Framework, they made it so she saved the Inhuman in Bahrain, but they used that to spring everyone into a world run by Hydra, which was actually very believable. So good job on that.

Another great thing….was WARD!!! He’s back! I don’t care that he’s just a computer model, it still counts! And I swear, he hasn’t lost a step, even in this new version of the character…who is a resistance fighter inside of Hydra, because why not?!?!?! Seriously, I hope we get as much screen time of him as possible, because he’s seriously the best thing in this world right now.

Though I will give some props to Aida for making herself Madame Hydra (of course…), and being “conscious” enough to realize what Simmons being in her “world” meant, well played. Oh, and her and Fitz being together? Yeah, I see it, she’s always had a soft spot for him since the beginning, so this is her way of “rewarding” that.

As for the ending, I guess I get that Coulson would remember, and Gemma pointing out Tahiti and showing Coulson was remembering something was good…but it still felt forced. Hopefully the rest of the gang will be a little harder to convince.
