TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Agents Of Shield Season 04 Episode 20: Goodbye Cruel World!

May 3rd, 2017 by Todd Black Comments

Well…ok then. That was…wow… If “Farewell Cruel World!” Did one thing right, it was sell how vital it was to get the heck out of the framework, but also, why it wasn’t an easy decision to do for people not named Simmons, Daisy, and Coulson.

One of the big fan questions was about Yo-Yo and how she and the other Shield agents were dealing with the situation, thankfully, we got that answered in full. And it was a very believable and compelling answer, one that really nailed home how they had to get out now.

Not that it was going to be an easy thing, as they had to get the team together, get to the backdoor, and get the heck out, all the while trying to not be killed by Hydra and Fitz. Speaking of…

It was fascinating to watch as Simmons realized what Aida had done in regards to Fitz’s father, and how that sole change made Fitz who he was. Now, the idea of her going alone to one of Hydra’s top agents in an attempt to get Fitz alone was absolutely stupid, make no bones about that, but it led to some interesting moments. Like Simmons killing his father, which made him betray Aida to get revenge, all the while being guided by Radcliffe…who saved the day! Didn’t see that coming, or at least, not like that.

The ending scene with each of them getting out of the Framework was very compelling. Coulson almost dying before getting out was well done, just as much as May taking a leap of faith, Fitz being forced out, and Daisy leaving Mack behind…about that…

Look, there’s still a small chance he can come out of the framework still, and out of all of them, it was very believable that he would stay behind because of Hope. I do find it odd that Daisy didn’t mention Yo-Yo, who she knew liked Mack…but oh well.

Also…how does Aida know how to teleport? That better be explained.

In the end though, “Farewell Cruel World!” was a perfect capper to the Framework storyline, and now with Aida having a real body and emotions, the entire team (save for Mack) out of the Framework, and work still to be done, the final two episodes are going to be cool.
