TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Agents Of Shield Season 04 Episode 21: The Return

May 10th, 2017 by Todd Black Comments

Huh…what was that line about a woman scorned? Yeah…Fitz’s thinking about that right now. “The Return” brought back just about all of the agents out of the Framework, and the ramifications of everything that had happened since they were in it had begun to come to life. And boy did this episode twist some expectations, and I mean that in the best way possible.

From the get-go, it was clear that something big was going to happen in this episode, but it wasn’t clear that ALL the big things were going to happen this episode. Agents of Shield has been known to pull some shockers, but this may take the cake. Killing the Russian in the opening minutes, only to realize that he was but one of many? Epic. Aida trying to prove she was a good person, and going so far as to save Mack (kind of…) to do so? Epic. Then, just when you thought that Fitz was going to admit that he loved Ophelia because of their time in the Framework…he says his heart still belongs to Simmons…and SHE FREAKS THE HECK OUT!!!!

Seriously, that was really cool, you almost believed that she might not be the villain now that she was human…and then she flipped…and now she’s the biggest threat ever because she has two powers and not just one. Yeah…I still don’t get that part…but I’m willing to accept it on sheer epicness.

Props to the actress behind Aida, she gave a great performance of someone who’s just now experience all that life has to offer…in both the good and the bad. Her turn to full on rage was very believable, and it led to some very horrifying death scenes.

Through in Talbot who was losing his mind in his own way because of what happened to the Shield base, Gemma trying to figure out if her Fitz was still there, May trying to figure out what happened and didn’t happen with May’s LMD and Coulson, and Yo-Yo now being programmed into the Framework (and being tied up…?) and you’ve got an unbelievable action packed episode that truly fired on all cylinders.

Speaking of which…GHOST RIDER IS BACK!!!!

In the end, “The Return” may just be the best episode of the season, and that actually puts a lot of pressure on the season finale because this is going to be a hard act to follow.
