TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Black Lightning Season 2 Episode 12: Just And Unjust

February 5th, 2019 by Todd Black Comments

Very strong night for DC Comics and their shows, and Black Lightning completed the great back-to-back with “Just and Unjust”, which continued to push forward even though it still tied into the death of Kalil.

It seemed like everyone had their own little story tonight, even if you didn’t recognize it. Jefferson and Lynn dealt with their continued martial problems in light of everything that was happening. Anissa was trying to be the helper to all, but learned brutally that doing things as “Blackbird” (nice name, though a little racist, but that was probably the intent) instead of Thunder will get her in trouble. And of course, we had Jennifer dealing with the death of her first love.

There were a lot of moving parts in the episode, and for the most part, they really clicked. Even the short Tobias scenes where we found out about the first pod kids, and the Markovian attack that was caused by Dr. Jace and the ASA, it all tied together into a really cool narrative. And it makes me excited for what comes next.

I found it kind of ironic that Jennifer became the Civil Rights activist of sorts in the episode, especially how in Season 1 she criticized Anissa for doing that, even calling her, “Harriet Tubman”, and yet now she’s doing that.

The only real problem was the Lowry scenes. On one hand, it was good to get some backstory to him and make him a small bit likeable, but then he turned that to a point where he still came off as a racist jerk. In fact, he basically blamed the black students, and Jefferson, for not getting appreciated simply because he’s white. I mean…really? It just came off as weird and wrong. There can be a fine line between guys like Gambi (who likes all people regardless of color and proves that with his actions), and the former head of the ASA (who only saw the Black community as animals and that they “deserved” to be experimented on). I THINK they’re trying to make Lowry that middle ground, but this wasn’t the way to do it.

Aside from that though, things continue to get better for Black Lightning, and they’re heavily teasing Jennifer becoming Lightning now, and I can’t wait.
