TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Black Lightning Season 2 Episode 8: Exodus

December 5th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Black Lightning has always been about the family element, so with Jennifer running away last week, it was time for the family to come together to find her and Kalil. And “Exodus” did a good enough job of making it feel like an event in regards to the hunt to find them.

Easily one of the best parts of the episode was everyone reacting in their own way to Jennifer’s running away. Anissa was mad at both Jen and herself for not seeing the clues. Lynn was distraught, Jefferson was passing blame instead of admitting his own hand in the events that led up to it, Henderson even got a few scenes that showed how much he cared for the Pierce family, and of course, Gambi was all about helping them, even revealing to Lynn and Anissa he was alive. Which is another thing, I’m glad that Anissa had that argument with Gambi, as not everyone should be happy he’s “alive”.

The focus on Kalil and Jennifer was good too. As it focused on their relationship dating back to season one, and Kalil going full tilt at times in regards to his fear of Tobias Whale, as well as the life he wants to have with Jennifer.

Tobias also got some good screentime, and eventually brought in another DC Comics character, Cutter, to help set things right. But what might be the best part of the whole situation is that he is starting to realize that Black Lightning has a connection to the Pierce family, and that could lead to many big things.

That all being said, there were some odd scenes, cheesy dialogue, and more that brought it down a little. And I didn’t like that Jefferson blamed Anissa for this set of events. Even if she had told Jen about Kalil being “dangerous”, she wasn’t seeing him at that point in the series, so it wouldn’t have mattered in the long run. Yes, he wouldn’t have known that, but it felt wrong for him to not see his role in all of this.

“Exodus” set up a lot of things for the midseason finale, I really hope it can deliver.
