TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Gotham Season 04 Episode 18: That’s Entertainment

April 13th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Huh, guess he technically wasn’t the Joker. Since his debut in Season 01, Jerome has been, for all intents and purposes, the Joker. He had the laugh, the insanity complex, the brilliant mind, and more. He even had key Joker events happen to him like the removal of his face, his cult, his resurrection, and last episode, the Joker Toxin. And yet, all the cast claimed he wasn’t the Joker. How was this possible?

Well, between last episode and tonight’s “That’s Entertainment”, we now know. Jeremiah is going to be the Joker now that he’s “Free” from his prison. It was a nice twist for Gotham, and one that played out in just the right way to make it believable while not dismissing all that Jerome had done leading up to this point. They even pulled out a page from Batman Begins about how a person like Batman or Joker can be a “symbol” or “idea” or “philosophy”, and that’s why they endure long after their gone.

And you have to admit, as a final act, Jerome killed it. He had the perfect plan, the perfect setup, and even a good getaway. If it wasn’t for Penguin doing a heroic act (admittedly in his own self-interest) he would’ve gotten away with dumping tons of Joker Toxin onto Gotham city.

This episode was also good for Bruce Wayne, who celebrated his birthday in royal fashion with a bulletproof car (that I demand to see in action soon), cake, and even having Selina coming over to celebrate with him. And then when things came to pass, he rose up like the Knight he’s destined to be in order to show that “facing terror is the only way to get rid of its power”. It was good stuff.

So where do we go from here in the Joker story? Is Jeremiah going to be going full Joker soon? Or will they wait for an arrival in the potential Season 05? We’ll have to see, but we might not have to wait very long to find out…

Speaking “where do we go from here”, the League of Assassin’s storyline has grown in some unexpected ways. Turns out, Barbara is a reincarnation of Ra’s former wife. Also, she’s cast out Tabitha, who’s now been picked up by the male half of the League. I smell a civil war.

In the end, “That’s Entertainment” delivered some interesting twists that have made this season very palpable. And there are still some loose ends to be dealt with before it’s all over.
