TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Batwoman Season Finale

May 18th, 2020 by Todd Black Comments

So…that happened. “O, Mouse!” was the latest in the impromptu season finales for the CW lineup, and for the Arrowverse, it’s been interesting to see how it would all play out. With this one, it was a bit more by-the-numbers in some aspects, and yet shocking others.

Let’s get to the less interesting stuff first, ok? Our “villain of the week” was that of “The Titan”, a former Gotham Knights football player who went crazy and got sent to Arkham…until the riot broke him out. Now, he was on a path of revenge to get back at everyone who betrayed him when he “snapped”.

As it turned out, it wasn’t steroids that ruined his life, it was that his team was trying to make sure he would still play so that they could win. While somewhat poignant in terms of the modern NFL and what we know about concussions, that doesn’t explain why he had those dual knives and could wield them with brutal efficiency…when his crime was “Mortal Kombating” a ref with his bare hands. Also, he was in Arkham…so…

That being said, what happened because of that was nice, as Batwoman had to try and get through to Jacob Kane in order to team up with him to take him down. Kane’s drive to take down Batwoman is basically becoming an obsession, and it’ll be curious to see where it takes him in Season 2, especially since we all KNOW that eventually he will indeed find out that Kate is the one behind the cowl.

Seeing Mary trying to convince her dad of trusting Batwoman, and Kane believing in her father against her friends better judgment was heartbreaking. As was her clear look of betrayal when things went wrong. Her line of, “My dad hates me…” was done perfectly by Ruby Rose. This family has some things to work out.

Speaking of the Kane family, Alice had arguably one of the most shocking episodes in not just the whole season, but all of the Arrowverse. What started out as “The Search For Kryptonite” (comic book reference!) soon became her own obsession with destroying her family…even at the cost of Mouse.

I’ll totally admit I didn’t see that coming. Mouse has been an integral part of the character that is Alice, so her without him? That’s…more dangerous, more than likely. And then the twist that she gave Tommy/Hush the face of Bruce Wayne? That’s a big stinger to end on for the season, which the showrunner last week teased was going to be huge, and she didn’t lie.

For those who don’t know, Hush/Tommy did indeed get Bruce’s face eventually in the comic via his own surgical tinkering. He used it to try and bankrupt his “old friend” but eventually got upended by another Batman villain in Jane Doe. Where this will lead is uncertain, and now that Bruce Wayne “has a face”, it’ll be interesting to see how this card is played going forward.

In the end, while impromptu, and not the best episode ever, “O, Mouse!” was one heck of a season finale with multiple twists that change the game for Season 2.

It’s just too bad we have to wait until January to see where this all goes…
