TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews The Supernatural Special: Scoobynatural

March 30th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Full disclosure. I do not watch Supernatural. I’ve known that the series has existed since 2005, and I have a friend who is a diehard fan, but i do not watch the show. So why am I reviewing this episode? Because I love Scooby-Doo, and I heard this was going to be a pure crossover of sorts. Having watched it, it’s now one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time.

For the record, if you’re like me, and haven’t seen any Supernatural before, don’t worry, you won’t get lost. You’ll learn about Sam and Dean pretty quickly, and once things get into Scooby-Doo world, it gets pretty epic.

Long story short, an even transports Sam and Dean into a TV where they now find themselves as part of an old episode of Scooby-Doo Where Are You? For Dean, this is paradise, as we find out that Scooby-Doo is one of the constant things him and Sam had during their childhood. So, when the chance arises to hang with the Scooby Gang, he takes it.

But, being that this is Supernatural, things go sideways, and the “fake” monster they’re dealing with turns out to be very, VERY, real.

What I love about Scoobynatural is that it’s everything that it should be, and more. The classic animation style, the voice actors from recent Scooby-Doo films and shows, callbacks to the series (including a Scrappy-Doo cameo!), it’s all great.

But then, when the news crashes over the team that things aren’t what they’re used to, they all have a mental breakdown, and it’s the coolest thing ever!!! As is Sam and Dean doing their best to keep the “purity” of the group intact, and that’s rather beautiful.

Add to that, Dean flirts with Daphne, Velma flirts with Sam, Kas finds humor in Scooby and Shaggy, and more, and you got an hour of pure bliss no matter what side of the fanbase you find yourself on.

Seriously, this is worth the watch, and I have it recorded on my DVR to ensure I can watch it over and over again.
