Things have been pretty quiet on the Star Wars animated front recently but if scooper Daniel Richtman is right, that may be about to change.
He’s reporting that Lucasfilm/Disney are developing at least ten new Star Wars animated shows which, if you think about it, actually makes a lot of sense.
How so? Well, since The Clone Wars kicked off in 2008 – man, I’m old – Star Wars animation has constantly been leading into new series.
SPOILERS: The Mandalorian and Grogu movie’s villain is a great Star Wars deep cut
2008 – 2014 was Clone Wars, leading into Rebels (2014 – 2018), then Resistance (2018 – 2020), then Clone Wars came back for one more season in 2020, leading into The Bad Batch (2021 – 2024) and now we’re preparing for the final series of Star Wars: Visions which kicked off in 2021 and ends this year; therefore, if the sequence continues, we’re due a new Star Wars series either towards the end of this year or next year.
Of course Star Wars: Visions is a sort of Star Wars: What If…? meaning that the Bad Batch ending last year was the last in-universe Star Wars animated show – yes, I know there’s Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures and Tales of the Jedi and Tales of the Empire are in there too, but I’m talking more about flagship animation here.
So, if it’s true, what do you think the series will be about? Personally, I still really, really want to see a Luke Skywalker/Jedi Academy series and, sticking with the OT, I think a Han, Luke, Leia and Lando series needs to happen because Disney didn’t treat them with the respect they deserve and now animation is likely the only way to honour them.
Seth Green says Disney believes there’s no fan demand for Star Wars Detours to ever be released
Of course, there’s Knights of the Old Republic, The High Republic, Bounty Hunters and so many other areas needing to be explored but I really, really think that Disney need to put right what once went wrong and pay the original characters the respect they deserve – no modern audience/new take/subvert expectations nonsense, just give the fans what they want and remember, if you really want to change something, you never really loved it in the first place.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear them…
