Everything We Know About Marvel’s Avengers

June 13th, 2019 by Crowbar Comments

Marvel’s Avengers is an ambitious title from Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix (Tomb Raider). Right up until June 10th gamers had no idea what the game was about. We had a very short teaser to tide us over. Now that we got some information, let’s dissect that.

Release Date: May 15, 2020
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

Story: A holiday known as A-Day is being celebrated in San Francisco. The Avengers rush into action after the Golden Gate bridge is attacked. A helicarrier that Captain America is on explodes, killing the Avenger. After a time jump, Tony Stark argues with Banner about the responsibilities and consequences of forming The Avengers.

Despite the argument, the words are then heard, “That’s not how this story ends”. It is unknown if the game is a standalone title, connected with the MCU somehow, or even part of the newly announced Gamerverse started by Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’S Spider-Man”. If I was a betting man, I would say that this game exists in the new Gamerverse. The game was titled, “Marvel’s Avengers” for a reason. To show a connection.

Characters: The visual appeal of this title shares a lot of resemblance to how the MCU heroes look. The game has been in development for a few years now so I am sure this is no coincidence. We only know the core Avengers are in the lineup with more to be announced down the line. Again, like so many times before, Hawkeye has been shafted. He’s not in the trailer, but he better be in the starting game lineup.

Sadly, the facial animations look very “Alpha Stages” and people have been poking fun of how they look. We’ve been fed live action movies of these characters for so long it is no surprise people just expect new media to have a resemblance to them.

Edit 6/12/19 5:43pm GMT: Hank Pym has been added to the roster. Here’s his teaser.

A massive question we had when the game was initially announced and the trailer subsequently was released was what kind of gameplay does the game have? Enix has answered This year at E3, the game is four player co-op with the potential to be played solo. In addition, the story and characters of the Avengers will be released over time and adding new regions to visit. Thankfully, these are all free. But this brings “live game” or “service game” titles into the ring. Will the game be run like Anthem or The Division?

We are still about 11 months out from even playing the game so any details about if it is or isn’t a “game as a service” are purely speculation.

That’s all we know about Marvel’s Avengers. Stay tuned to Following the Nerd for more information.
