X doesn’t mark the spot with the PlayStation controller

September 10th, 2019 by Geralt of Australia Comments

Throughout the years it’s always been the same with the PlayStation controller with triangle, circle, square and X.

Well, that’s all changed now with a little tweet from PlayStation UK (below) changing everything we thought we knew about the controller.

The button that we all so fondly call the “X” button is, in fact, the cross button according to PlayStation UK and fans are torn with this new bit of news and don’t know what to do with themselves.

This actually makes quite a lot of sense when you look at the controllers, the other three main buttons are all named after shapes so why all of a sudden did we think that this one was named after a letter instead?

Then there’s the geometry of it all; an X, as you can see, has longer verticals than a cross does whereas a cross has equal distance from the centre.

Now, personally, I know this isn’t gonna stop me from calling it the X button; I mean, if Sony calls it the cross but the rest of the world calls it an X then does it really matter who’s right? Everyone’s just gonna keep blaming the lag anyway.
