That lovable dog, Gromit, is getting his own autobiography and with the audiobook release, we’ll get to hear his own words for the first time for the first time since he first appeared in A Grand Day Out almost forty years ago in 1989… but it’s not HIS voice.
What?
Well, in all the adventures we’ve had with Wallace and Gromit, Gromit has never spoken and if you watch the trailer below for Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit, you’ll hear Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Sherlock star Martin Freeman read the fictional book however, this isn’t a big reveal of how Gromit sounds, but rather just a narration of his words.
“When you create a character who has no voice, and whose facial expressions are everything, what do you do when your publisher reminds you there’ll be an audiobook? Who could possibly be the voice of a character everyone feels they know, but nobody’s actually heard?” said Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Gromit.
“The more I thought about it, the more I realised Martin Freeman was the obvious choice really. I was genuinely thrilled and honoured when he said yes.”
The audiobook is due on Oct 22nd, but Park wants you to know that Freeman is not voicing Gromit: “Martin is not doing a Gromit ‘voice’ as such. He’s reading Gromit’s story as Gromit put it; his inner thoughts, his candid insights and endless witticisms, bringing to them his usual colour, thoughtfulness and wry humour.”
I think Freeman is a great choice for this reading, but I also love that Park is going out of his way to make sure we all know that this is not how Gromit sounds; after four decades, we don’t need to hear Gromit; we’ve come to know his mannerisms and thought through the amazing work of the animators at Aardman Animations, and that has always said more than words or dialogue ever could.
