Ben Whishaw to rock as Freddie Mercury

December 10th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

When actor Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out of the Freddy Mercury biopic in the summer, it seemed like the film was in a state of flux. Today though it seems that the film is now firmly back on track for a 2014 release.

According to Deadline, Ben Whishaw best known for his role as Q in 2012 Bond film Skyfall will now play the role of the Queen singer. Up until this Whishaw has been known for relatively minor roles so this could very well be his breakout role.

Deadline have also reported that actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher is set to direct and has even met with the surviving members of the band to discuss the film and making of. Going by Fletcher’s recent critically acclaimed Sunshine on Leith, itself a movie based around songs by the Proclaimers, we can expect a great film.

The script is being written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, Rush) which will  apparently detail the formation of Queen as a band and culminate in their classic performance at Live Aid in 1985. This will of course mean the film will not cover Mercury’s death in 1991 not unlike another musical biopic Walk the Line which also chose to not show events surrounding Johnny Cash’s death but instead chose to celebrate his life on film.

Really looking forward to this one and as always we’ll keep you posted.
