This is our first official look at Japan’s live-action adaptation of The Next Generation: Patlabor. The full-scale Mech robot in the poster is part of the Japanese police force used to combat giant robot crime.
The project was announced at the Taiwan International Comic Exposition on Thursday. The film is currently slated for a 2014 release and the anime’s original director, Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) will be involved in some capacity. Oshii has past experience directing live-action features but it is unknown whether he will actually direct this project or is merely on board as a consultant.
The story takes place in what was, at the time of release, the near future of 1998-2002. Robots called “Labors” are employed in heavy construction work. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police has its own fleet of Patlabor robotic police officers to combat crimes and deal with accidents involving Labors. It’s a combination of office comedy and police drama.
