Joaquin Phoenix out of talks for Doctor Strange?

October 3rd, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Back in July it was revealed that three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix was being considered for the lead role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange film. Then in August it was reported that Phoenix was in “final talks” for the role, but now according to Deadline those talks have fallen through and Marvel will look for another actor.

A previous rumor placed Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy on Marvel’s short list.

Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats, with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts.

Although no release date for Doctor Strange has been confirmed, it seems to work with July 8th, 2016 that Marvel has set aside and that has been reported by some.

Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose helmer Scott Derrickson will be directing.
