UPDATED RUMOR: Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Wars: Episode VII as a Sith?

September 2nd, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

The newest Star Wars rumor going around is that the one and only Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining the cast of the newest trilogy. According to Film Chronicles, it is only a matter of time before it is confirmed that Cumberbatch will indeed be in a Galaxy Far, Far Away:

“There’s a lot of gossip swirling around that Lucasfilm are about to make a big casting announcement regarding Star Wars VII, and that casting announcement appears to be none-other than Benedict Cumberbatch, most recently seen in director JJ Abrams’ previous movie, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’.”

There was a lot of speculation surrounding Cumberbatch’s departure from Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak due to the fact that no reason was given for the drastic move. This could indeed be that reason!

It’s worth noting that they don’t reveal any type of source and the timing of the rumor seems suspect as well since Star Trek Into Darkness is released on DVD and Blu-ray today in the UK.

Anyway let us know what you think?

Well this is interesting…..

UPDATE: Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci has joined the fray and said that he’s heard that Cumberbatch is playing a villain, most likely a Sith:

“I’ve heard this too, and I’ve heard the role he’s up for is that of a bad guy, almost certainly a Sith. And it’s a major role, one that will continue throughout the whole new trilogy. This part is why he dropped out of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak

But it’s not a done deal, and it may not yet come together. There are some other commitments Cumberbatch will have to break to secure the part. In the meantime, I know that there have been official denials coming down from multiple channels – these denials are why the story didn’t break in a trade – but with a JJ Abrams production I never believe the denials. That’s not to say I think Cumberbatch is guaranteed the part, I just ignore the denials and wait for the official announcement. “

Remember when they denied Cumberbatch was playing a certain villain in Star Trek Into Darkness? So let’s see how this one plays out.

Filming is rumored to start in January, which means casting announcements must come soon right?

Star Wars: Episode: VII, scheduled for a 2015 release will be directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Michael Arndt.
