So far this year, Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse has easily been a top-five movie, maybe even top three, so we’re all here at FTN, just like everyone else, very excited for the third and final chapter in the trilogy, Beyond the Spider-verse, which is due next March… but we may have a disappointment ahead.
Amid rumors of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller being absolute perfectionists and animators on the verge of breakdown, it seems that the third movie arriving in under 12 months is, well, impossible.
“I would say that just like we’re going to take the time necessary to make Beyond the Spider-Verse great,” Lord said with Miller adding: “And we won’t back into a release date that doesn’t fit.”
Totally understandable, given that the first movie was an Oscar winner and the second may have topped it in every way. But, with Lord and Miller saying they have no desire to go on to do more movies in this universe, you can see why they want to make a perfect trilogy, especially when they’ve delivered two near-perfect chapters to start it off… no matter what the studio may want.
And this was before all of Hollywood went on strike.
“They’ve announced that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in March of next year. I’ve seen people say, “Oh, they probably worked on it at the same time.” There’s no way that movie’s coming out then,” said one of the animators on the second movie, “There’s been progress on the pre-production side of things. But as far as the production side goes, the only progress that’s been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts. Everyone’s been fully focused on Across the Spider-Verse and barely crossing the finish line. And now it’s like, Oh, yeah, now we have to do the other one.
One other animator, the week before the second movie was due to come out, said that Lord’s perfectionism was making it tough to just get the movie finished and out to cinemas: “Animation is finishing Friday. Completely. No animator is going to put a key down anymore. And Phil is still rewriting stuff. Sony has been fighting with him on this for the whole movie. I don’t know if he’s delusional. It’s really nuts. I’ve worked on projects where things are rewritten — even late in production. But this is another level of craziness.”
Truth be told, it seems like getting Across the Spider-verse out was a tough ask and with Lord and Miller wanting to ensure they get a strong final chapter, it’s looking less and less likely we’ll be seeing the sequel in 2024 at all, never mind in March!
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently set for cinema release on March 29th, 2024
