Dave Bautista thinks he’s done in the MCU after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

May 6th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Just days after Marvel teased the return of the Guardians of the Galaxy in May, 2023 (here), star Dave Bautista has revealed that it’ll likely be his last outing in the franchise.

That means that Drax will likely have three more appearances in the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, Guardians Vol 3 and in next Christmas’ Guardians Holiday Special (here). While little is known about either adventure, it is expected that Vol 3 will explore Rocket’s origins and, it seems, see the end of Drax the Destroyer.

Writer/director James Gunn has also revealed that the third installment will be his last too.

Currently doing press for Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated Army of the Dead, Bautista was asked about the third movie in the franchise and had some interesting things to say.

“I don’t know what the script of the third film is, to be honest with you,” he said.

“There was a script years ago that obviously is going to have to change because the whole direction of the Marvel universe has changed [editor’s note: last we heard in 2019 was Kevin Feige was planning on using the same script (here)]. There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film. It was really because it was James Gunn’s idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven’t heard any follow-up from the studio. I don’t think they’re very interested, or it doesn’t fit into the way they have things mapped out.”

He then added: “But other than that, no. I mean, as far as my obligations, I’ve got Guardians 3, and that’s probably going to be the end of Drax.”

It’s speculation but I’m sensing tension in this – seems that Bautista is unhappy about all that’s happening but is keen to step out of the MCU. But between the next two Guardians projects, the Army of the Dead franchise, My Spy II and more, it’s safe to say that Bautista will be kept busy for the next few years, I’d imagine.

How do you feel about Gunn and Bautista leaving? Gunn has hinted in the past that is the MCU ever has a Guardians Vol IV it’ll likely be a whole new team and tone… that seems to be playing out as things stand right now.
