While we learned that filming on the third TRON movie, TRON: Ares, was put on hold during the strikes in Hollywood, we’re now hopeful that things will begin moving as the strikes have ended… but there might be more TRON coming down the line.
Ares will pick up from TRON: Legacy which starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and saw the real world and the electronic world of TRON overlap with Wilde’s Quorra, a program from the computer world, finally stepping into the real world. While Ares is set to star Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith, there is no mention of Cillian Murphy joining the cast after he was set up in Legacy as the villain in future installments.
But now we have learned in a new interview with Collider that Disney’s Creative Chief Officer Jennifer Lee, who is basically the boss of their animation output, will bring up TRON at their next monthly meeting.
Fans will recall that TRON had a brief animated series called TRON: Uprising which ran for one season in 2012 and was, frankly, brilliant [it even featured Flynn!]- it was canceled when then Disney execs realised that the story contradicted the story they wanted to tell in the then-planned third outing which, obviously never happened – so, Disney, if you’re reading this, can you also pick up and finish the Uprising story, please?
Lee was asked in the new interview if there’s a chance we might see a TRON animated movie: “Once a month, I just have lunch with all the directors together, and I’m gonna say, ‘There has been a request. Is there anyone here, who has been dreaming of that to happen?’ We’re filmmaker-driven, so then I can blame them, if it doesn’t happen. No, I’m teasing. Just tell him that I’m gonna write that down and bring that to them. Unfairly, I haven’t done that yet, so I will. I love that.”
So, there you have it, while we’re waiting on TRON: Ares to move ahead, we can hope that maybe, just maybe, Jennifer Lee is a woman of her world and someday, we’re going to head into the Grid in a more animated adventure.
