Do Sci-Fi Movies Make For Great Games?

February 23rd, 2018 by Marc Comments

There have been some absolutely superb sci-fi movies over the years and while it may not have been a genre for everyone at the beginning, it’s fast becoming one of the most popular now.

What has also often happened with sci-fi movies is that they have gone on to become film series’ or franchises, which have then branched out into other areas of the entertainment industry. One area where sci-fi really has excelled is in gaming, but do sci-fi movies really make for great games?

One of the biggest movie franchises of all times is Jurassic Park. Michael Crichton’s creation became an instant hit with viewers as they watched films showing how dinosaurs came back to life on the island of Isla Nublar.

It’s an award winning film series which has spawned numerous other titles such as Jurassic World and it’s no surprise they became a hit as video games too. People loved being able to control dinosaurs and there have been Jurassic Park themed games since the 90s, with more expected this year. Jurassic Park and Jurassic World also made it in the online casino industry; and has been a huge success with established online casino operators like Unibet.

Planet of the Apes is another huge science-fiction franchise that took the world by storm. The first Planet of the Apes films were released between 1968 and 1973 and were very popular. These films included Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape From the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

It was in 2001 when Planet of the Apes made a comeback and there have been another 3 movies since. The original reboot saw a great Planet of the Apes game hit the market across console, PC and handheld platforms and that too became a hit with players. Planet of the Apes is also another title that has had a lot of success in the online slot game world.

The Terminator film series is an all-time classic created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. It was based on the battles between Skynet’s synthetic intelligent machine network and John Connor’s Resistance Forces alongside the human race. Skynet had various terminator modes and one, the T-800 (Model 101) was portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger who coined the world famous catchphrase “I’ll be back” in the very first Terminator film.

There have been 5 Terminator films so far, with another set for release next year in 2019 and while that seems a lot, there have been a staggering number of games based on this hit sci-fi movie franchise too. The first was released back in 1991 and there have been well over another 20 game titles released since.

People loved Terminator games because they were great shooters that also had a strong link to the film too. They could play the games and be heavily involved in the battles they saw in the movies and this provided a great gaming experience. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that online casino game developers have embraced the franchise and developed slot machines based on the chilling character.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
