It seems like Hollywood is really making another go of trying to turn video games into film franchises. With Warcraft already in post-production and with a new Tomb Raider film in the early stages of planning, it seems that more will be arriving imminently.
With this in mind, It seems that Square Enix is throwing its hat into the ring, by letting the production company, Straight Up Films, make an attempt at a Thief film. The script is currently being developed by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Misconduct, Not Safe for Work), but no other announcements have been made.
“We have always been passionate about telling stories and bringing them to different medium,” says David Anfossi, Head of Studio, Eidos-Montréal. “With the world of Thief coming to feature film, a larger audience will be able to dive into this universe. Straight Up films shares our passion and has the expertise needed to meet our expectations.”
Overall, I can’t say I am overly excited about this. With the recent, lukewarm, reception of the Thief reboot, I can’t really work up much excitement for a film. However, for fans of the series, I hope that it can meet their expectations.
