AMC’s Preacher had a special debut screening at the SXSW festival this week and the audience was surprised to see a certain famous Scientologist pop up with a cameo in the premiere episode.

Yep, Tom Cruise, according to reports, made a surprise appearance in the first episode as a Scientology preacher, who appears on a TV screen on behalf of the church before, em, exploding in an apparent alien attack (no, really).

If this is true – and we hear it certainly is – then we have to salute Cruise for having the humour to do it, and it’s just another reason for us to be excited to see it.

The show is an adaptation of Gareth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s popular comic book series and is executively produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
