Following on from their in-development Blue Beetle (here) and Batgirl (here) movies, it seems that HBO Max are also now developing a Red Hood movie.
The movie will reportedly follow the Batman: Death in the Family story which will see Joker murdering second Robin, Jason Todd only for him to reappear a shirt time later as the vengeful vigilante, Red Hood.
Interestingly, according to the report: “The film will take multiple perspectives with that of Jason Todd, Batman, Nightwing, the GCPD, and even The Joker. There’s no word if they’ll bring in existing actors who have played these roles in previous films or if they’ll cast different actors. However, we can confirm that this will connect to Chris McKay’s upcoming Nightwing movie. So it’s safe to assume that whoever is cast as Nightwing in that movie will play him in the Red Hood movie.”
This is exciting for several reasons. The Batgirl movie is connected to the current DCEU, with JK Simmons returning as Commisioner Gordon, so if this movie turns out to also be, then we could see Ben Affleck return as Batman and Jared Leto’s third appearance as Joker after Suicide Squad and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Of course, none of this is completely out of the blue as we have reported many times that HBO Max want Affleck back as Batman/Bruce Wayne (here) and, since he’s back for The Flash movie, we don’t think we’ve seen the last of this Batman just yet. At least, we hope not.
Also, it wouldn’t be that hard to recon the dead Robin in Batman V Superman to be Todd rather than the confirmed Dick Grayson.
Anyway, this is a project I’d be very excited for and I see it as a way to bring together Batman, Batgirl, NIghtwing and the whole Batfamily.
Word is that HBO Max are already seeking a director for the movie with Judas And The Black Messiah’s Shake King, God Bless the Child’s Robert Machoian and Saint Maud’s Rose Glass all in the current spotlight.
Interestingly, Curran Walters, who plays Jason Todd/Red Hood in Titans season 3 last week Tweeted, then deleted his interest in doing a Red Hood movie:
Is this a coincidence? A mistake? Or something else? I’ll let you decide for yourselves.
Personally, I love the idea of DC/Warners having big tentpole movies based in the DC universe on the big screen, while smaller, lower budget, character-driven tales can be featured on HB Max. I think this will build a wonderfully complex and layered universe pretty quickly and I just hope that with Green Lantern, Justice League Dark and other shows in development, we can have them all interconnected in the same reality.
No harm in dreaming, is there?
Thoughts on a Red Hood movie? I want to hear them all.
