Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña has signed on to join the DCEU and HBO Max as DC films first Latino hero.
The young star who plays Miguel in the hit series will join the movie from Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto from Scarface and Miss Bala writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
The movie will not focus on the first two Blue Beetles Dan Garrett or Ted Kord but will focus on the new incarnation of the character who first appeared during DC’s Infinite Crisis event. Young Reyes is a teen from El Paso who discovers the Blue Beetle Scarab which grafts itself to his back and gives him powers such as speed, strength, the ability to create weapons and to fly.
Maridueña is a cracking young actor and it could be argued he’s the heart and soul of Cobra Kai, so seeing him lead an adventure like this should be a great opportunity for him to step up to the big leagues.
The Blue Beetle movie will be a HBO Max exclusive, similar to the planned Batgirl movie (here) – it’s a bold but very exciting way to expand and develop the DCEU.
