LISTEN: ‘I’ve spoken to David and Gillian,’ Chris Carter talks new X-Files plans

September 6th, 2026 by Marc Comments

It’s a big time for fans of The X-Files right now with a new comic, LEGO set and, oh, yeah, a new reboot starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel from none other than Black Panther and Sinners’ Ryan Coogler, but it’s also well known that original creator of the series, Chris Carter, is teasing one last series of the show to wrap up his original series.

While we’re still unsure if Coogler’s reboot is canon to what has gone before (though I really suspect it is), we do know that both Fox Mulder and Dana Scully themselves, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, have been approached about appearing, we also know that Carter wants a last stab ot the iconic franchise to bring to an end his vision for Mulder and Scully’s story.

Now, in a new interview with Seriously Obsessed Podcast, below, Carter confirms he has approached both stars and they are aware of his planned ending of the story: “Oh, certainly, I mean I can’t and don’t want to do it without them. I’ve already teased it to David, and I’ve teased it to Gillian, but they’re very busy people. They’ve got lots going on,” Carter said.

“They know what I’m aiming for and at, and they didn’t before when the show came to an end there (in 2018). I told neither of them, and I felt that something was left undone, and so I met with them each individually and kind of told them what my plan was, whether or not, and whenever it may or may not come to fruition. They at least have a sense of what I’m planning.”

The X-Files kicked off in 1993 and ran for nine seasons until 2002, also spanning two movies, a spin-off series with The Lone Gunmen, and a world of comics and novels. It was brought back in 2016 and then 2018 for additional seasons ten and eleven, but that has been the end of the story until the recent news of Coogler’s plans to bring back the series with a new cast. The Pilot is already filmed, and we’re waiting to hear whether Hulu will order a series.

So, while a lot is going on, we’re still unsure of the franchise’s future on our screens, with Carter’s series yet to get a go-ahead and Coogler’s still waiting on a series order.

Whatever happens, The X-Files will always be around for the massive fandom and look, if we’re lucky, we might well have two X-Files series happening at the same time very soon. Or none. But that’s how it goes; just ask Buffy fans.

So, The X-Files, what happens next? Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.

New details on Ryan Coogler’s X-Files pilot… could we be seeing a theatrical release?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
