Henry Cavill back as Superman… JJ Abrams!? Cameos?! What does it all mean?

Oh boy, it is ON at last!

It looks like DC’s cinematic universe is set to get its Man of Steel back in the form of Henry Cavill and we here at FTV HQ could not be happier!

According to Deadline “Cavill is in talks to reprise his Superman role in the Warner Bros DC Universe [and] could come back in a couple of different ways, though not in a stand-alone film. But there are plans to put him back in the big red cape again, sources with knowledge tell us.”

We have been reporting on this possibly happening for a while now (here) and had heard that Cavill may return in the upcoming Black Adam movie with Superman facing off against the anti-hero played by Dwayne Johnson and this new report would tie-in to that rumor with Cavill not getting a standalone movie for a while but rather tying together the other movies in the DCEU for the time being.

Cavill made a surprise appearance on Zack Snyder’s Vero Watch Party for Man of Steel last week:

It has been a long time coming for fans of Cavill’s Superman who has had a bumpy ride so far in the DCEU but, personally, I really like the actor in the role and would be pacing the floor to see him return in the role, but I would be happy – for the time being – to see Superman coming and going in other DC movies.

It’s unlikely we’d see him appear in the already wrapped Wonder Woman 1984 or the currently shooting The Batman, but with Aquaman 2 and The Flash both on the horizon, it’s not entirely impossible that we’d see him in one of these.

And we also have Shazam! 2 and Black Adam waiting to start filming, which is where I’d imagine we’ll see him first.

Speaking of Shazam!, that movie’s director has finally put Cavill into the ending of the movie after it was a stunt double used in the first movie:

However, it’s not just in cameos that the rumour mill has put Cavill’s Superman in as a new interview with Lost and Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof has thrown JJ Abrams’ – who is now signed up with Warners – name into the arena, deliberately or not.

This is not the first time Abrams has been linked to a Superman project (here) with a Green Lantern and Superman project being touted before and his failed to launch Superman project a few years back called Superman: Flyby.

“This was all before Chris Nolan came in and basically took over Batman, et cetera,” Lindelof says, “but it all kind of just got lost in the wash,” added Lindelof, before he said that Abrams had “a long-term obsession with Superman.”

“I guess what I would say is I would love to see a JJ Superman movie, but I don’t have a take on the character that would be better than that.”

Lindelof also said that being asked to write a Superman movie would be “immensely flattering” as he and Batman are “the big two,” adding “It’s incredibly daunting.”

Lindelof believes that the problem with Superman is making him relate to a modern audience, although, to me, I thought Man of Steel did just that, but he goes on: “I think the challenge with Superman is always going to be what does Superman mean in the contemporary framework? For a character, for a culture that’s basically moved into this sphere of antiheroes, how do you make space for Superman who is sort of the original superhero?”

So, whatever happens, it looks like we’re getting Superman back in the form of Henry Cavill and I think it’s true to say that now, more than ever, the world needs Kal-El.

I’ll leave you with this image shared by Cavill himself on Instagram.

Hello again, indeed:

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
