Insane design work appears online from cancelled Ghostbusters animated movie

July 26th, 2023 by Marc Comments

The good folk over at Ghostbusters News have stumbled upon concept art from what is believed to be an abandoned animated Ghostbusters feature film has gone viral, with the premise turning the franchise on its head, as a cast of ghosts and monsters would’ve served as the famed paranormal eliminators!

Uploaded sometime ago to artist Michael Kurinsky’s ArtStation page, a tweet posted by @LostMediaBusters has already garnered over 250k views, grabbing our and fellow Ghostbusters fans’ attention.

Taking a look at Kurinsky’s original uploads, below, reveals a few familiar faces, among them caricatures of both Ray Stantz and Peter Venkman, both of which have ties to the franchise’s prime canon, being based on original film stars Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray.

The above image, however, provides a concept of Ghostbusters that we’ve NEVER seen before and, honestly, would likely prove to be a fun off-shoot, putting the unlicensed nuclear accelerators into the hands of the paranormal.

Looking at the heroes, three of the four would’ve likely been ghosts, showing traces of either slime or appearing semi-translucent. A small, gremlin-like creature is also spotted holding the Ghostbusters’ traditional PKE Meter.

SDCC 2017: Ivan Reitman confirms animated and live-action Ghostbusters movies in the works

When it comes to the setting, clearly, we’re not in New York, with a lake of green slime being seen behind the spectral foursome, paired with a building showcasing the no-ghost logo alongside a Taxi service. There’s also a sea of fearsome paranormal activity found in the sky.

There are no details on the exact timeline of when this concept was in the works or if this animated take would’ve been a full-on reboot or, instead, had relatively light links to the original prime canon.

However, back in 2017, when Answer the Call had flopped and Sony was keen to get Ghostbusters back on track, original movies director Ivan Reitman discussed plans for an animated Ghostbusters movie they were designing that would focus on the ghosts, rather than the busters: “I think we have wonderful plans, both for an animated feature that we’re deep in design on already and a really great story,” Reitman said.

GHOSTBUSTER DAY 2022: Ghostbusters animated movie has writer and directors! Yes!

“That’s going to surprise everybody, I think, when it comes out. And we’re dealing with Ghost World quite a lot. We’re looking at the film from a ghost point-of-view, and the Ghostbusters from a ghost point-of-view. I think that would be something very interesting for you. And of course a new live-action film.”

At the time I imagined a more true-to-the-franchise take on animation but this looks like a nightmare cross of Ghostbusters and Pixar and I would bet good money, that’s where this art is from.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
