James Cameron discusses bringing Alita: Battle Angel back as a streaming series

January 23rd, 2023 by Marc Comments

Just before we all stumbled in 2023, we reported that James Cameron – still riding high on his ongoing success with Avatar: The Way of Water – and Robert Rodriquez, last seen directing The Book of Bova Fett – are hoping to reunite to bring us the long-anticipated sequel to Alita: Battle Angel… but it may not be exactly what we hoped.

Cameron had long wanted to bring the Anime Battle Angel Alita to the big screen in live-action and he finally managed to produce it in 2019 with Rodriquez directing and, while it wasn’t a massive success, it did well and has earned itself a legion of loyal fans (and we’re among them here at FTN HQ).

Starring Rosa Salazar as the titular android hero, the movie is a fun, beautifully produced sci-fi tale that is rarely made these days and, honestly, if you’ve not seen it, you really should.

Now, on the latest episode of The Business podcast, Cameron said he’d “love to be on it” when asked about doing more Alita, this time on streaming.

“I think streaming is an opportunity to do long form [and] I certainly have no dearth of ideas, and I like working with other filmmakers like I did with Robert Rodriguez on Alita: Battle Angel.”

Getting to the bare bones of why we probably haven’t seen more Alita yet, Cameron went on: “It didn’t quite make enough money to make everybody grin from ear to ear, but we may revisit that IP, we hope to anyway.”

But has Cameron got more Alita ideas and story ready to go? “I’ve always written more than we can conceivably pack into the box of a conventional movie,” he said, “and I don’t like all that interesting character development and interesting scenes getting chopped out, either at the scripting stage or in the post-stage.”

We here at FTN have made no secret of our love for Alita: Battle Angel and hoe much we’d like to see the franchise return and/or get wrapped up, so be it a movie or be it a series, Alita – and James Cameron – will have our bums on seats on opening night.

Anyone else? Let me know…

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
