Keaton talks returning as Beetlejuice and making it old school

August 20th, 2023 by Marc Comments

Following the current trend of bringing back iconic characters from the 80s and 90s, we learned recently that Tim Burton was bringing us a new Beetlejuice movie with stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder returning and now Keaton has teased a little about the filming of the project.

Along with the original director and stars, the movie will also see Danny Elfman return to score the movie and Scream and Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega will have a starring role too as the daughter of Ryder’s Lydia Deetz.

Speaking at an event for The Flash, Keaton assured fans that the movie is shaping up well and is being put together just as they did in 1989s original movie and, even better, he seems very excited to be returning as the Ghost with the Most.

“Beetlejuice is the most f–kin’ fun you can have working. It’s so fun, it’s so great. And you know what it is? We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie,” he said.

Relishing in the macabre nature of the franchise, he said: “There’s a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line – I want people to know this because I love it – tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move.”

We all knew that Beetlejuice 2 was a sequel both Burton and Keaton have wanted to make for years – at one point it was to be called Beetlejuice in Love – (seriously, just search Beetlejuice in our search engine!) and it’s exciting that it’s happening and it’s a full reunion.

“[Burton] and I were talking about it years and years ago, never telling anybody. I said, ‘if it happens, first of all, we’ve both said we’re doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something. F–kin’ great. It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long.”

I’m a massive fan of the original movie and Keaton, Burton and Elfman are among my favourite artists working in film today (Batman ’89 was a very formative movie for young me), so I’m very excited for this and the fact that it’s being made by true artisans, like Ghostbusters: Afterlife, who rely on miniatures and models rather than an over-abundance of CGI, well, that’s just the icing on the cake.

The sequel is set for September 6th, 2024 – maybe hold it back for Halloween, guys! – and that’s 36 years after the original movie.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
