MARVEL MOVIE ROUND-UP: Nova Corps set for Guardians of the Galaxy, Whedon denies Planet Hulk, Feige talks about the tone of Iron Man 3 & Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Another week, another bunch of news from the Marvel movieverse.

Yes, according to Harry Knowles over at Aintitcool, it has been confirmed by someone on the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie production team that Nova Corps (pictured above) will be in the movie. Apparently on top of this, Harry has seen production art with Nova ships in it and on top of all that still, Geoff Boucher, senior writer at Entertainment Weekly, has also commented they’ll be in the movie. Probably.

The Nova Corps are an Intergalactic Space Corps – similar to the Green Lantern Corp in DC lore. The Corps played a big part in the Secret Invasion storyline and could be a way for the Marvel movies to feature that story, and Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has confirmed most of Guardians takes place in space. So it looks like it will be a very different Marvel movie. Which can only be awesome, really.

In related news, following up on our report last week (here) that the Planet Hulk story would NOT be part of Avengers Phase II or III, the great Joss Whedon has spoken on the subject, albeit briefly, to IGN. When asked if Planet Hulk was coming, he simply said: “Well I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense.”

Sfx have added to the chatter by talking to Feige about all things Marvel movies. He said that “[‘Thor: The Dark World’] and the ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ film certainly are cosmic. ‘Guardians’ and ‘Thor’ will take the brunt of the cosmic side of the universe, particularly ‘Guardians,’… [which is] much more of a standalone film. It takes place in the same universe. And when we’ve been on the other side of that universe in other movies, you might see those characteristics in ‘Guardians,’ but the Avengers are not involved with what’s happening out there at this time.

However, with everyone thinking about Tony Stark at the minute with the new Iron Man 3 trailer only hitting yeaterday (here), Feige was keen to point out that the new Phase II stories aren’t just about the spectacle but the personal too:  “I think ‘Iron Man 3’ shows the other side of Phase II, which is delving deeper into the characters. Throwing them on a much more personal journey. Shane Black’s described ‘Iron Man 3’ as a Tom Clancy sort of political thriller, which I like a lot.

On Captain America: The Winter Soldier he said: “We hired our directors on Cap because they loved our explanation that we really want to make a ’70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie. Just like with the first film – we got Joe Johnston because we said, ‘We want to do a ’40s World War Two movie masquerading as a big superhero movie.’ I love that we’re doing a sequel to a film that’s a completely different genre than the first film. I think that’s fun. And the comics do it all the time.”

Guardians of the Galaxy is out on August 1, 2014
Iron Man III is out on April 25th 2013 in the UK
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is out: April 4th, 2014

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
