Michael B Jordan addresses his rumoured Superman casting/attachment

May 2nd, 2021 by Marc Comments

We learned in February that JJ Abrams and DC were reportedly developing a new Superman movie penned by author and Black Panther comic writer Ta-Nehisi Coates which wouldn’t star Henry Cavill but rather would be a black actor in the lead role (here).

Now, while it would make sense for this to be Calvin Ellis, left, DC’s black Superman in the comics, but we’ve heard that no, it will be Clark Kent… this is all just speculation at the moment, of course, but it does tie in to the rumors (here) we have heard for a few years that DC/Warners want Creed and Black Panther star Michael B Jordan for the role.

Now Jordan, who is working with DC on developing a Static Shock movie and who is rumoured cast in pretty much everything these days, has addressed the rumours and has also said that, being a comic book fan, he understands why fans are annoyed when things are changed for no good reason and says he too would be annoyed.

“I’ve been rumored to play Morpheus to Superman to Power Rangers and everything in between,” the star said. “So it’s like, I’m kinda used to the rumors I’m playing something. But, anything that I do dive into has to be done the right way. It has to be full of authenticity. I’m a fan of comic books, you know? I understand, you know, the fans being upset at, ‘Oh no, why are they doing this and why are they changing that?’. I would feel the same way about certain things. So just know, if I ever were to dabble in anything, it would be authentic and something that I feel like people would really support.”

This, to me, sounds like Jordan is saying that he would not be interested in playing a black Clark Kent but would be looking to something authentic… like Calvin Ellis. After all, we have a multiverse, both these Supermen (Supermans?) could co-exist and even potentially meet down the line.

However, Jordan does say he is flattered at all the rumours and fan-castings: “You hear the whispers and the rumors and stuff like that and it’s just a compliment.

“You know, I appreciate people that think about me in that type of way for these roles. I don’t really have anything more to give on that other than it’s just flattering and I appreciate it. But, you know, whoever they get or if it goes that way, I think it’ll be an interesting thing to see.”

It sounds like Jordan is pretty grounded about this and is well plugged in when it comes to what’s being said online, it also sounds like he’s a real comic fan and isn’t interested in randomly race-swapping a character known by millions of people but would rather bring his talent to a fresh, unique take on a new character… and we here are FTN fully support that idea.

We go through a hypothetical of what the DCEU could look like once The Flash introduces the multiverse to the movies (here) and it does explore how Cavill and another actor could both have a red, blue and yellow suit.

Let me know all your thoughts, folks.
