Michelle Rodriguez confirms she’s back for Fast & Furious 9 so long as a female writer joins the team

It looks like Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty will be back for Fast & Furious 9… but under one condition.

I reported in February that the star would only come back if the movie was more inclusive as she was very much about female empowerment: “My energy is completely directed toward the feminine right now and supporting women. I’ve spent most of my life shooting guns, and hanging out with the boys, and watching them scratch their balls, and smelling protein-mixed farts. And now I’m feeling the poetry and the beauty and the sensuality of women, and the power we bring together,” she said.

“So they need to show more love to the women. I don’t know which direction it’s going to go. But I know that I’m headed in that direction. We’ll see if that all matches.”

And it looks like she did indeed get her way because the actress has confirmed she would com back… so long as the movie has a female writer involved: “I felt like there was not enough of a female voice in the franchise,” Rodriguez said.

“You should evolve with the times, not just pander to certain demographics that are stuck [in the past].”

The Fast franchise has had $billion and I know plenty of women – my wife and daughter among them – who love the franchise, so i’m not sure it’s really just appealing to demographic stuck in the past. That said, the franchise, more than most, has been incredibly diverse since day one and has evolved successfully over the years, so let’s hope the amble pays off… of course, it all comes down to the writer at the end of the day.

Let us know your thoughts, folks.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
